Slacan Industries proudly participated in the Forging Industry Association (FIA) Lobby Day in Ottawa, where we joined fellow industry leaders in advocating for the needs and future of the forging sector. The event, held on May 22-23, 2024, provided a unique opportunity to meet with key representatives from the Government of Canada, discussing critical issues affecting our industry.
One of the primary topics on our agenda was the enforcement of fair-trade practices. The forging industry has faced significant challenges due to the influx of ultra-low-cost forgings from Chinese state-owned enterprises, which sell their products below the cost of production in North America. This unfair competition has led to the closure of 228 North American forging plants since 1979, including many in Canada. We emphasized the need for a commercially viable forging industry in North America to ensure economic security and support for both grid electrification and defense needs in the case of wartime mobilization.
The forging industry is a vital part of the Canadian economy, generating over $15 billion in annual sales and employing approximately 35,000 people across the U.S. and Canada. However, the industry faces a significant challenge with an aging workforce. The average age of a forging industry workers is 56, highlighting the urgent need for recruiting and training the next generation of skilled workers.
During our meetings, we advocated for government support in promoting upskilling and new skills development through funding programs at trade schools and universities. We also highlighted the importance of innovative immigration policies to quickly grow the labor force, ensuring that Canada remains competitive in the digital manufacturing environment.
Our participation in the FIA Lobby Day was a significant step in advocating for the needs of the forging industry. We believe that by working together with government representatives, we can address the challenges facing our industry and ensure a prosperous future for all stakeholders. Slacan Industries remains committed to driving innovation, promoting fair trade, and supporting workforce development to sustain the forging industry's vital role in the North American economy.
We are grateful for the opportunity to represent our industry in Ottawa and look forward to continued collaboration with government officials and industry partners. Together, we can forge a stronger future.
